Industry traditionally relied on informal on-the-job training, with brief safety training courses to pass on skills to junior employees. But there were drawbacks to this approach. As long as industry used an informal training structure, the public misunderstood just how much knowledge and skill drillers, derrickhands and motorhands need to get this job done. There was a perception that the best career a drilling rig offered was one of continuous unskilled labour.
Because of trade designation, industry can raise its profile as a career of choice to the next generation of tradespeople. |
